Around 600 soldiers from the 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, Valcartier, Quebec, are taking part in CASTOR BORÉAL, a winter warfare training exercise at 5 Wing Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. The exercise started on Feb. 10 and runs until Feb. 18.
During the training, the troops will test their ability to defend a strategic site and a major attack and defence simulation will take place at the Goose Bay Airport, the Canadian Forces noted in a news release. Soldiers representing “enemy troops” will parachute in, and friendly troops will take position to defend the airport in order to maintain operations, the military noted.
The exercise will also include joint operations with the Canadian Rangers and officers from the Polish Army.
Air support includes:
One CH-146 Griffon helicopter from the 444th Combat Support Squadron
One CH-146 Griffon helicopter from the 430th Tactical Helicopter Squadron
One CC-130 Hercules aircraft from the 436th Transport Squadron
One CC-150 Polaris aircraft from the 437th Transport Squadron

CAF to Conduct Arctic Warfare Training

Soldiers from the 3rd Canadian Division will take part in Exercise ARCTIC RAM 2016, in Resolute Bay, Nunavut next month. Troops from 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry will parachute into Resolute Bay on Feb. 11. Soldiers from 38 Canadian Brigade Group will also take place in the exercise.
Meanwhile, Exercise RAFALE BLANCHE 2016 is also underway. It will end on February 19 and is being held in the Valcartier training areas and in the municipalities of Nicolet and Bécancour, Que. 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (5 CMBG) units based in Valcartier are taking part. The exercise will enable 5 CMBG members to conduct military manoeuvres in winter conditions, the Canadian Forces noted in a news release.

Foreign troops and numerous reservists will also contribute to the training. About 20 Polish soldiers will take part in the exercise with their counterparts from 3 Battalion Royal 22e Régiment (3 R22eR).
A portion of Exercise RAFALE BLANCHE 2016 will take place in the municipalities of Nicolet and Bécancour from February 4 to 7, where the members of 12e Régiment blindé du Canada (12 RBC) will perform manoeuvres in civilian areas in partnership with Primary Reserve units, 430 Tactical Helicopter Squadron and 5 Field Ambulance.
Many Reserve units will participate in Exercise RAFALE BLANCHE. To name a few, units from Trois-Rivières, Sherbrooke, Montreal and Gatineau will support 12 RBC in Nicolet from February 5 to 7.

OP UNIFIER Taking Shape: Canada in Ukraine
The Department of National Defence announced yesterday that members of its Theater Activation Team (TAT) have been hard at work in the Ukraine setting up the Canadian Forces site for Task Force Ukraine that will deploy later this year.
Operation UNIFIER is Canada's contribution to help the Ukrainian Armed Forces through military capacity building in coordination with the US Armed Forces already on the ground in Ukraine.
The TAT team is largely based out of CFJOSG Kingston, other engineers, and specialists have been deployed from around the country to establish the Canadian camp near the International Peacekeeping and Security Center (IPSC) near Yavoriv, Ukraine.
The TAT team, approximately 90 CAF personnel arrived in the Ukraine on August 5, 2015 and before the beginning of September Task Force Ukraine will deploy.
Task Force Ukraine will be made up of approximately 200 CAF personnel that will be deployed until March 31, 2017. The majority of the first ROTO will be from 2 CMGB out of CFB Petawawa; while later ROTOs will be from 5 CMBG from CFB Valcartier.

Approximately 550 Members of the 2nd Canadian Division (all part of 5 CMBG) and part of 2 CMBG (Petawawa) along with British Army Troops are training in Simulated environments as part of UNIFIED RESOLVE 2015.
The exercise is running from February 10 through February 27 2015. It is a key step in the training cycle and Road to High Readiness, part of the CAF's policy.
The training is specific to helping train command and control capabilities of an Army Brigade. Participants are using computer-generated scenarios which simulate realistic and complex situations including attacks and mobile defense.
