HMCS St. John's on Stand-By for Irma Relief
The Canadian Forces says it is ready if called upon by the Canadian government to respond to any relief effort in the wake of Hurricane Irma.
“The Canadian Armed Forces remains on high alert and monitors the situation closely,” said Department of National Defence spokesman Daniel Le Bouthillier. “As a precautionary measure, the CAF has identified Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship ST. JOHN’S to be ready to support any potential relief efforts, should they be directed by the Government of Canada.”

DND fined $100,000 for diesel fuel spill from HMCS St. John’s

The Department of National Defence was ordered on April 11 in Halifax Provincial Court to pay a penalty of $100,000 after the DND admitted violating the Fisheries Act.
The charges stem from a May 8, 2013, incident where approximately 9000 litres of diesel fuel was spilled from HMCS St. John’s into Halifax Harbour while the vessel was at anchor, according to the federal government.

This led to several reports of a large sheen in the harbour and a strong smell of diesel fuel in the surrounding area.
DND representatives reported the diesel fuel spill on the morning of May 8, 2013, and participated in efforts to contain and recover the spill over the next several days. On January 30, 2015, Environment and Climate Change Canada charged DND for an alleged violation of the Fisheries Act.
Of the $100,000 penalty, $98,000 will be directed to the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund.
The Environmental Damages Fund is administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada. The fund was created in 1995 to provide a way to direct funds received as a result of fines, court orders and voluntary payments to priority projects that benefit our environment.

CAF Counter-Terrorism Exercise Planned Oct. 15-16
Some 400 members of the Canadian Armed Forces will partake in a counter-terrorism exercise off the coast of Nova Scotia on October 15 & 16 2015.
The exercise, FRONTIER SENTINEL will be jointly run with the United States; will include Joint-Task Force Atlantic, and the civilian ferry Princess of Acadia which will act as a vessel of "interest."
The RCN HMCS St. John's is scheduled to be part of the exercise, which will encompass elements of the Coast Guard, RCMP, Transport Canada, and Health Canada, plus our American counterparts.
FRONTIER SENTINEL started in 2006, and works with the US Coast Guard and US Navy to practice, evaluate, and make recommendations to enhance capabilities when responding to threats to North American Maritime Security.
In this years exercise, participants will respond to a hijacking and waterborne terrorist threat in the Yarmouth area.
The CAF will have approximately 400 members involves. 150 members will be on the ground, 250 members from HMCS St. John's and the CP-140 Aurora Crew of 15.
